About Obruta
Founded in 2019, Obruta Space Solutions is enabling the in-space economy by developing the advanced autonomy systems required for in-orbit satellite servicing, logistics, and active debris removal. Today’s satellites are single-use assets that cannot be refueled, inspected, or repaired. Obruta is eliminating this barrier with our flagship product: the RPOD Kit—a turnkey, vision-guided Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) subsystem that makes autonomous spacecraft docking commonplace.
Backed by leading venture capital and top-tier space innovation programs, Obruta is executing cutting-edge perception and navigation projects with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), National Research Council (NRC), and international commercial partners.
The Role
Obruta is seeking a dedicated and organized Technical Project Manager to lead project execution across our portfolio of space technology development projects, non-dilutive government grants (CSA Space Technology Development Program (STDP), NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), and commercial client deliveries.
In this role, you will be the operational backbone of our engineering execution. You will manage schedules, milestone deliverables, risk registers, and financial claims while keeping our multidisciplinary engineering teams (GNC, AI Computer Vision, Embedded Flight Software, and Robotics) aligned and moving quickly. You will report directly to executive leadership and work closely with our technical leads to ensure every project is delivered on schedule, on budget, and to technical specification.
Key Responsibilities
- Multi-Project Portfolio Execution: Oversee day-to-day project workflows, milestone schedules, Work Breakdown Structures, and resource allocation across multiple concurrent CSA STDP, NRC IRAP, and commercial contracts.
- Grant Administration & Reporting: Lead and coordinate all milestone report generation, formal deliverable submissions, technical progress reviews, and financial claim filings for Canadian government programs.
- Budget Tracking & Cost Accounting: Collaborate with internal leadership, accountants, and bookkeepers to monitor eligible project expenditures, burn rates, and project financial forecasts in compliance with grant contribution agreements.
- Engineering Team Alignment: Facilitate sprint planning, daily standups, sprint reviews, and blocker resolution across GNC, Embedded Systems, Computer Vision, Systems Engineering, and Robotics lab teams.
- Risk & Scope Management: Maintain and proactively update technical and managerial risk registers (mitigating supply chain, technical interface, and schedule risks).
- Procurement & Contractor Coordination: Manage vendor quotations, hardware purchase orders, supplier delivery schedules, and academic/subcontractor deliverables.
- Compliance & Export Control Support: Assist in maintaining operational compliance with the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and associated export/licensing documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 3+ years of formal project management experience delivering complex software, hardware, aerospace, or deep-tech engineering projects.
- Demonstrated track record managing technical schedules, Work Breakdown Structures, and multi-stakeholder deliverables on time and on budget.
- Strong financial and operational acumen with experience tracking project expenses, resource hours, and project budgets.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with experience writing structured technical reports and executive summaries.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada and eligible to obtain Canadian Controlled Goods Program clearance.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada. Successful candidates must able to obtain and maintain a security assessment under the Controlled Goods Program.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Formal Project Management certification (PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP, or Certified ScrumMaster).
- Direct experience managing contracts funded by the Canadian Space Agency (STDP / Class Grant & Contribution), NRC IRAP, or the Department of National Defence (Innovation for Defense Excellence and Security Program (IDEaS).
- Familiarity with aerospace development workflows, mission lifecycles (Phase A–E), and flight software/hardware verification standards (TRL progression).
- Experience working in a fast-paced venture-backed startup or high-growth engineering environment.
Why Join Obruta?
- Direct Impact: You will play a foundational role in scaling operations at a fast-growing space company shaping the future of on-orbit servicing and space logistics.
- High Ownership: You will have autonomy in defining and refining our project management and operational workflows.
- Culture: We foster an inclusive, ambitious, and collaborative engineering team dedicated to solving high-stakes aerospace challenges.
